It may seem quite silly, embarrassing even, but one of the greatest life quotes I’ve ever heard came from the movie, “Bride Wars”.
Anne Hathaway turns to Kate Hudson and says, without a hint of doubt that they can’t run with their earphones in because that is only for people who cannot be alone with their own thoughts.
While this is a major generalisation and could be untrue for many people, I believe there is some truth behind it.
It doesn’t just apply to runners.
You could be walking, riding, driving, travelling on a tram, train or bus, and be avoiding your own brain by blasting your ears full of tunes.
Sometimes I find myself aimlessly listening to music to avoid the sure-to-be-confusing thoughts running through my mind.
And I turn it up loud.
So there is no chance that one might chuck a sneaky fox and get through.
But not today.
Because today, out of the blue and without hesitation, I rode the tram without my earphones firmly popped in my ears. All I had to listen to was the random bustle of the everyday and the random wanderings of myself. And it was fine. Refreshing even.
I was completely at ease until the moment was spoiled by me spilling coffee all down my white silk blouse, but hey you cant change the habits of a lifetime right?
The point is, while I’m perfectly delighted that I have the choice to pick a soundtrack for each and every day (The Black Keys and Ratatat are currently tied winners), life’s natural soundtrack is deliberately unavoidable and simply beautiful.
Sometimes life is what happens when you’re spilling coffee on yourself, realising how lucky you actually are.
STAY COOL X
