When Peter-Pan took the Darling children to visit Never-Land, he offered
them a home in a tree with the lost boys, and a life filled with pirates and
mermaids and Indians and adventure. He gave them the chance to live in a world
of no responsibility, of no rules and of no bedtime. But they chose to go back
to London.
They chose reality over make believe.
There is a tendency among those of a privileged life (those with a roof
over their head, food in the belly, clean water, no gun-fire on a daily basis)
to wish to live in a tripped out, parallel universe where people live forever
and never have to learn or grow up or make decisions or feel pain or work hard
or take charge or grow.
They wish for something that is unreal because they
believe their lives are too constricted. They think it will change their world.
But it won’t.
Life can be so much better than Never Land. Not everyone settles
themselves in a house with four walls and job with set hours, in a city they
have never left, in the country they were born in, in a reality they never
tried to break.
Some people move from place to place, learning the secrets of
unknown streets and unfamiliar faces. Some people venture far and wide while
others tend to stick a little closer to their starting point. Some people
create their own work and sew the seeds for their own veggies and live by their
own rules. But this does not mean they do not know what reality is. Being free
and adventurous goes hand in hand with reality. You have to really live in
order to be free of constraints that metaphorically cage you in.
Free spirits run wild. But still know the meaning of consequence. They
know how to be kind, and caring and selfless. They are the type of people who
see beyond the easy-way-out-lets-just-pretend-we’ll-never-grow-up attitude and
realise that to never grow up doesn’t mean acting like a child; it means always
being curious and never losing hope. They strive to find the truth. Are open to
love. Are respectful of nature. Are willing to take risks.
And they do not
pretend to be above it all. In fact – they don’t know much about much and
therefore learn something about everything. Nomads. Gypsies. Bohemians.
Animals. Cool cats. Whatever. They’re just people. Who aren’t afraid to live in
this world, this space, this time.
Never Land is for runaways. It is a place that does not exist. Isn’t it
better to find adventure and love and purpose somewhere tangible and real? Isn’t
it the greatest feeling of all to plant your feet firmly on the earth and
state, without the slightest of hesitations: I am not afraid. Life, come right
at me. Because in the end, that’s what the Darling children chose.
They chose
to be real.
